I had a scheduled induction for May 27th at 8pm. Being late in the evening on the 26th, Dan and I were settled into that idea. We spent that last day picking mom up from the airport and grabbing some last minute items from Babies R' Us, including a waterproof mattress pad. We watched t.v. and talked about what the next day would bring and how our lives were going to change. Dan and I had been walking a couple of miles a day to try to kick start labor, but to no avail. That last night we intended on walking a few miles to make sure we tried everything possible to induce natural labor. We only made one lap around the court because my foot was hurting so bad. We headed in and Dan started shaving and I went straight to bed. I made a comment to Dan about possibly putting the mattress pad for Isaac's crib on my side of the bed just in case my water broke. We decided the chances of that happening were slim, so we opted not to. I fell asleep immediately and was woken up shortly after to two strong kicks to my belly. Surprised that he actually woke me up, I just layed there with my eyes open. Not two seconds later my water broke, in bed. Where I had not put a mattress pad. :/ I jumped out of bed and ran into the bathroom where Dan was covered in shaving cream and told him, "I think my water just broke". He stared at me in shock and as I looked down, my suspicions were confirmed. I called my doctor and she instructed us to head into the hospital. Dan got all the shaving cream off of him, and we started packing our labor bag. Of course we weren't packed yet, we were being induced the next day, so that's when we planned on doing it!! We headed out of the house within the hour and started our labor journey. We called some family and friends, but not everyone seeing as it was 2 in the morning when my water broke. We made it to the hospital and were admitted. This was the longest and most amazing day of our life.
Just admitted and feeling really good. I was having very mild and very sporatic contractions at this point.
Mom and Matt were in attendance
The most amazing husband in the world. We both had been up since 10am that morning and it was now 3am. We were tired but super excited!!
Circumstances have changed. :) Mom and Matt went home to get some rest since we knew this labor process was going to be a long one. I had some blood drawn and an IV started. They gave me regular IV fluids with no medications in them just to hydrate me. As soon as the IV fluids were started at 545am I started having painful contractions that came every 1 to 2 minutes. There was no rest period in between them and as contractions tend to do, each one was more painful than the last.
It was excrutiating. At this point I had been up for over 24 hours and had non stop contractions with absolutely no break periods. :( It was hard. I had planned on laboring in the jacuzzi tub to help control the pain, rather than using any pain meds. Unfortunately not every room at St. Lukes has tubs in them, and as luck would have it, I got a room with no tub, just a shower and a shower chair. :/ There were no other rooms available. I decided to give the shower a chance.
Post shower back in bed. The shower helped some, but was not very comfortable for me or Dan. Poor Dan had been standing up the entire time I was laboring, rubbing my back and shoulders and holding the shower head on my lower back. He was in pain, and we already know I was as well. I thought I had been in the shower for hours, it had been 1 hour. 1 hour. I was beyond exhausted at this point and just wanted to rest. I had labored for over 6 hours of non-stop contractions with no pain meds, and finally decided that it was time to get an epidural, and some well needed rest.
Post epidural, trying to rest. Still feeling contractions, ecstatic about the relief I knew was coming. When I was admitted I was 1cm, 60% effaced and baby was at a -3 station. Dr. Ortique checked me prior to getting my epidural(1115am) and I was 3cm dilated, 90% effaced and baby was at a -1 station (further down in the birth canal). Our goal is 10cm dilated, 100% effaced and baby at a +2 station or more. So I had definitely made some progress with my labor thus far.
Epidural has kicked in. Can you see the difference? Dan and I tried to rest but it was hard seeing as we were over tired and people were non stop in and out of the room. The doctors didn't want to check me a lot since my bag of water was broken and there was an incerased risk of infection. My Dr. had mentioned early in the day that she was not going to be available for delivery from 4pm to 8pm. So our "plan" was to not deliver during those times. :) My contractions never slowed down the entire day, they continued at 1 to 2 minutes apart. I was so very thankful that I decided to get the epidural when I did, especially after seeing that a rest period would have never come. The plan was to check me at 6pm. 6pm came and I was checked....
I was fully dilated! 100% effaced and a +2 station, ready to push!! Did I mention it was 6pm?
Matt rushed over from work, thankfully Mark had flown in that day and made it in time as well!
We were really excited!! So seeing as Dr. Ortique wasn't available I was going to have to be delivered by a stranger, which I didn't want. They gave me the option of waiting for Dr. Ortique to arrive as long as baby looked happy and I was comfortable. Dan and I discussed it and decided that was the best option for us. So we waited another 2 hours until she arrived!! And poor Uncle Matt threw out his half eaten burrito and raced over with cop lights on and all, only to wait another 2 hours. That's love.
Dr. Ortique!! Praise the Lord!! Look at my face, so comical.
Preparing to push!
We were so happy Dr. Ortique was there. She thought we were just plain silly for waiting for her, but we love her and wouldn't of had it any other way.
In between pushing, waiting on the next contraction to come.
Pushing! Dan was the best labor partner ever. He was so supportive, encouraging and loving throughout the entire process. God has blessed me so much with this man. I love him.
We had our amazing labor slow jam playing. :) It was a wonderfully calm and peaceful environment. My best friend Bonnie was present and is responsible for all the beautiful photos you are viewing. She prayed with us before we started and God's presence was truly felt throughout the entire process. I am truly blessed to have such a great friend. Dr. Ortique is one of the calmest people I have met and she definitely brought even more more peace and calm. It was a wonderful experience filled with love and lots and lots of laughter.
The epidural ran out right before Dr. Ortique arrived and we decided to leave it off. For some reason, turning the epidural off spaced out my contractions. :/ We were waiting 4 or 5 minutes sometimes to push. Isaac was going to come on his own terms and at his own timing. :)
Push!
My lovely OB.
He's amazing.
After an hour and a half of pushing, here he is!!
